Independent libraries

State Library of Queensland works with local government towards the advancement of Queensland public libraries with services and initiatives, funding, grants, professional development and program support. This important partnership enables a thriving statewide network of Queensland public libraries and Indigenous Knowledge Centres (IKCs).

Independent libraries operate in councils with populations over 15,000 and represent the largest number of public libraries in Queensland.

Libraries Act 1988 (PDF  471 KB) - determines State Library’s strategic direction to contribute to the cultural, social and intellectual development of all Queenslanders.
