FIRST® LEGO® League Robotics Grants now available for libraries

LEGO® Mindstorms kits and support are being provided to public libraries to deliver workshops to young people in 2016

State Library and FIRST® Australia are supporting Queensland public libraries to offer robotics workshops in 2016 for young people aged 9 – 16 using LEGO® Mindstorms kits.  Grants are being provided to libraries servicing rural, remote, low socio-economic status and Indigenous communities, or other underrepresented groups.

Successful grant recipients will receive LEGO® Mindstorms equipment, a FIRST® LEGO® League registration and kit, and training (all supplied by FIRST® Australia, with support from Google Australia).  State Library will provide financial support ($1,500) to successful grant recipients to assist libraries to staff and resource robotics workshops and a community demonstration.

Participating libraries will provide weekly workshops for six weeks to a group of up to 10 young people using the LEGO® Mindstorms kit. The groups will learn to build and program a robot, learning about science and engineering in a fun and play-based setting.  At the end of the six week program each library will run a community event to demonstrate participant achievements.

Applications have now closed. Successful grant recipients are:
